What is Stabilized Turquoise?
Soft or "chalk" turquoise has been infused with a clear epoxy resin. Chalk turquoise is a form of natural turquoise that has a white chalk-like consistency. It has the same chemical composition as turquoise, only without the copper (it's the copper that causes the turquoise color). The chalk is then dyed and stabilized to produce a material. The resin, under pressure, absorbs into the rock, which permanently hardens the rock and deepens the color. Unlike the collectible natural turquoise which deepens in color over time by gradually absorbing oils from the skin as it is worn, the colors in stabilized turquoise are permanent. Most of the turquoise on the market is stabilized and should not cost as much as non stabilized but is often sold as non stabilized so it's always a good idea to ask before you buy. Stabilized turquoise can be very beautiful, and is a good buy.
